How Birth Control Helps Acne

There are many different ways that birth control helps acne. The hormones a woman's body produces are one of the primary culprits in acne outbreaks. Various birth control pills and other medications, though, have been shown in scientific studies to reduce acne problems in many women.

Many women find that they have the most acne outbreaks a week or so before their monthly period. During this time, most women are experiencing an overflow of hormones like estrogen. This overflow can cause more secretion of sebum than the body can handle. That endlessly leads to acne related problems like black heads, white heads, and angry red blemishes.

Birth Control Options

There are several different birth control treatment options for women. One pill is called an oestrogen. This can help to reduce the excess oils produced by your glands at that time of the month. There are a number of other pills that might help as well. Ethinylestradiol and mestranol are frequently prescribed by doctors for acne control and birth control reasons. Most of these are usually consumed in very low doses, like one hundred micro grams each day, as that is what the studies show the best treatment option is so birth control helps acne.

You should consult your doctor to decide how birth control can help your acne, but the most common form is to use a low dose oestrogen in a two or three week course. For the first course, you will not use them with progesterone. However, in the second course, they are used with progesterone in a pill for twenty-one days. You will only notice a chance in your acne after three to four cycles of treatment, as it can take that long to change the oil production in your body.

Before you start to discover how birth control helps acne on your own, don't forget that there can be side effects. Consult your doctor and discuss all of your options before you begin treatment.
